Animated Documentary from my PhD work
“While all documentaries purport to teach us something about the world, animating documentary broadens the epistemological potential of documentary by expanding the range of what and how we can learn.”
(Honess Roe, 2019:129)
The animated documentary above was created as part of my doctoral research. It took shape over the three years of my PhD, with a focus on exploring the relationship between industry and educational stakeholders in the field of animation in Scotland. In the broader context of my research, this film serves as a provocation to the writing, aiming to uncover solutions through the tension it explores. While it stands alone as an interesting piece—one that perhaps mirrors the creative process beyond just animation—there's a deep, underlying tension throughout. It reflects the experience of a creative searching for belonging or the spark of ideation.
Below, I’ll break down the various elements of the film and explain how and why they were made. But as for whether I was successful in achieving my goals... I’ll leave that for you to decide.
